A Month of Chills and Thrills - A Look at Upcoming Horror Releases in September 2025

As summer fades and the nights grow longer, horror fans have plenty to look forward to. September delivers a diverse lineup of spine-chilling films, ranging from supernatural hauntings to psychological terror and slasher mayhem. With the return of fan favorites and a new outing from Brandon Christensen, there’s no shortage of thrills leading up to the Spooky Season. Whether you’re drawn to suspenseful mysteries, eerie folklore, or full-on slasher scares, this month’s releases promise to keep every horror enthusiast on the edge of their seat.

The Conjuring: Last Rites

The Conjuring: Last Rites sees the return of Ed and Lorraine Warren in the final chapter of The Conjuring saga. Inspired by the infamous 1986 haunting of the Smurl family in Pennsylvania, the Warrens are called out of near-retirement to confront one of the darkest cases of their careers. Joined by their daughter Judy and her partner Tony, Ed and Lorraine must face a demon that knows their weaknesses and is determined to end their fight against evil once and for all.

Featuring the return of the iconic Annabelle doll and looking like a reprise of the Ed and Lorraine adventures we all know and love, The Conjuring: Last Rites has the potential to be a haunting conclusion to one of horror’s most successful franchises.

Bloody Disgusting describes it as “The scariest Conjuring yet—and the most heartfelt.”

Traumatika

Young Mikey suffers from terrifying night terrors, but when his mother Abigail begins showing signs of possession, those fears become real. Spanning three chapters - from an ancient curse to a family’s collapse in early 2000s Pasadena, and the chilling consequences years later - Traumatika delivers a disturbing new take on demonic horror.

Combining eerie atmosphere, practical effects, all indications are that this is an intense family story encased in a sharp, unsettling horror experience.

Rabbit Trap

Set in 1976, musician couple Darcy and Daphne relocate from London to a remote Welsh cottage to work on their new album using analogue synthesizers and field recordings. When Darcy accidentally records a mysterious woodland sound their creative retreat takes a dark turn. An enigmatic child appears, drawing them deeper into the surrounding folklore and exerting an influence that becomes increasingly sinister. As their reality unravels, the lines between nature, myth, and madness blur in this dark and moody folk horror.

“A folk horror mood-piece drenched in natural dread and technical finesse.” - Vulture

HIM

Cameron Cade is on the brink of a breakthrough until a brutal injury shatters his dreams. When NFL legend Isaiah White offers to train Cameron at his secluded compound, hope seems within reach. But Isaiah’s methods soon reveal a dark cult-like intensity, and Cameron’s journey into fame spirals into a terrifying test of his mind and body.

Produced by Jordan Peele's Monkeypaw Productions and promising to be disturbingly intense, HIM explores the cost of ruthless ambition in a psychological horror experience where greatness demands sacrifice.

Entertainment Weekly predicts “A blood-chilling descent into power, manipulation, and the darkness behind the dream of glory.”

Night of the Reaper

Set in 1970s suburbia in the summer of 1976, college student Deena returns home and reluctantly agrees to babysit the sheriff’s child on Halloween night. Meanwhile, the sheriff receives a cryptic package tied to a previous babysitter’s brutal murder and is thrust into a sinister scavenger hunt. As clues pile up, Deena and the sheriff become pawns in a deadly, masked killer’s twisted game of cat and mouse.

With VHS-style visuals and a slow-burn whodunit structure, Night of the Reaper is shaping up to deliver a clever update on the slasher template. I love a horror mystery and with Brandon Christensen at the helm, I can't wait for, what looks like, his Halloween homage.

“This clever whodunit blends retro visuals with slasher energy and synth thrills.”IMDb’s Jonathan Dehaan

Runtime: Approx. 93 mins

The Strangers: Chapter 2

Maya, the sole survivor of the masked killers' first onslaught, thought she was safe until The Strangers return with their murderous intent. With nowhere to hide and no one to trust, she must face their brutal pursuit once again as they return more ruthless than ever. This time, the terror doesn't end at dawn - it’s personal and has far-reaching consequences.

Layered with glimpses into the killers’ pasts and a sharper, more focused approach, Chapter 2 builds on the tension of the first film which points towards a lean, suspense-driven continuation of the story.

“The Strangers are back—more brutal and relentless than ever.” - Daily Dead

Runtime: Approx. 96 mins
